Shard Plotline - Hephaestra is the head of the Order of the Silver Key. She believes that with all of the gathered knowledge and wisdom at the Order's fingertips, that they know best how to rule benevolently and should therefore be in a position of power. She also wants to uncover some of the forbidden magic from the last great war, for safekeeping and for protection.
Backstory -
The Bluestone clan was well-known for its arcane craftsmanship. Hephaestra was apprenticed as a child and grew up living and breathing magical machinery. As she grew older she became something of an inventor herself. When she (inevitably) lost a few fingers to a spell gone wrong, she replaced them with a metal glove-like contraption that allowed the metal fingers to flex and bend almost naturally.
On the day of her 21st birthday, she was to be initiated and promoted from apprentice to journeywoman. Dressed in her best clothes, she padded nervously down tunnel to the Great Hall. She could hear the buzz of conversation inside. Her soon-to-be ex master joyfully waved her over toward a side door.
"I know you have a lot of offers, lass," he murmured to her, "But do remember there's always a home for you in my shop if you like! Now quick, go in from this door and wait with the others until we call you out!" Hephaestra nodded, mouth dry. She opened the door and stepped inside.
To...somewhere else entirely. She spun around, but her hand grabbed at nothing and the door was gone.
That was nearly 10 years ago. In her early days in Sanctuary she found her way to the great Library in El Shadiya. Most of it was above-ground, but the close passages between shelves of books made it feel like home to her. Desperate to find a way home, she buried herself in the books and in conversations with the regulars. This is how she found the Order of the Silver Key, and after many years serving as their 'magical mechanic', she was appointed headmistress.

Character Description - Hephaestra is stocky and solidly-built. She is average height for a gnome, just under 4 feet tall, though she often wears shoes with lifts to make herself appear taller in a world full of taller creatures. Her skin is a deep earthy brown, and her eyes are so dark they are almost black. Her long hair is a deep red, like clay, though sometimes she likes to dye it other colors. Her nose looks squashed and lumpy, and she has a wide smile, giving her an open and friendly face. She has several arcane-looking tattoos on her arms and back.
Character Kingdom - Andus
Special Role-play Trait - Mechanical truthsayer. She has a little pocket-watch-type device, which can sometimes alert her if someone is lying. Players will be asked oocly if they are ok with the device 'working', with an alternative being that player characters are often shielded either by their own innate powers or by their patron deities.
Previous World - Hephaestra comes from a partially-underground city called Dar Shollun, in a world similar in feel to Forgotten Realms.
