Interesting story.
Regarding the Shard Plot-line, you do not have to commit to anything. It is acceptable to give only general directions of your involvement and wait for things to happen organically in-game. I believe unless you can provide such a generic direction, you will not have mainland access (but may acquire your shapechange, RP and complete it later if you want).
Regarding your special RP ability and character description, I do not know if it is possible to change along the way. An admin will have to answer that one.
