Mentionning it in case this is not "working as intended".
It seems inscription can be trained away from the crafting stations by using the skill to copy books (clicking the blue gem from the skill menu and selecting two books).
To be honest I'm not 100% sure it works as it could just be the passive skill gain, but a quick experiment with a macro suggests it could indeed trigger a skill check, except one with a very low success chance (the gains are nothing like from using the station).
Maybe some testing can be done to make sure (one would have to set skill to 0 and capable of upgrading, which requires a crafting skill taht has not been trained at all).
