For the mining skill, there are exactly 2 ores that require higher mining to smelt the ore than that required to dig it up, at least according to the wiki.

The two are brown stone and cottage gold.  They are the only materials that are this way.

So, when you dig them up, you either store them in your bank box, or you just leave them on the ground until it decays.

Seems sort of a waste to me...
